Green energy as the next growth propeller.

India must go for far-sighted policy initiatives and a collaborative response with multilateral institutions to transit to clean energy At the Quad summit last week, as also at the last G20 summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India’s commitment to combat climate change, as we move towards the target of “net-zero emissions by 2050”. This calls for far-sighted policy initiatives and a collaborative response with multilateral institutions to achieve a transition to clean energy. The sunrise sectors that emerged as post-pandemic growth catalysts have been healthcare, ed-tech, digitisation, fin-tech and e-commerce. While there is a greater urgency to transition to smart infrastructure and green technologies, this space is yet to see traction, as renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), sustainable infrastructure, smart urbanisation and smart ruralisation, water harvesting, recycling of post-usage wastage and so on, are still in nascent stages of adoption by corporates and co

‘Deshmukh performing well, no question of his resignation’

The ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Monday scotched the intense speculation that it had asked Maharashtra Home Minister Amit Deshmukh to put in his papers over the allegations of “inept” handling of the explosive laden SUV recovery incident and subsequent murder, saying that that Deshmukh was performing well and the question of his resignation did not arise. Talking to media persons here, Maharashtra NCP president Jayant Patil said: “Anil Deshmukh is performing well as the State Home Minister. The question of his resignation does not arise. Hence there is no need for speculation over his resignation”. Patil made the statement soon after NCP chief Sharad Pawar held an hour-long meeting with chief minister Uddhav Thackeray apparently over the situation arising out of the recovery of explosive-laden SUV near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence on February 25 and the events like the murder of businessman Mansukh Hi

Jailed terrorist Koufodinas ends hunger strike after 66 days.

Image
Greek convicted terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas has ended a 66-day hunger strike that left him dangerously ill. Koufodinas, 63, who is serving 11 consecutive life sentences plus 25 years for murders he committed as the main hitman of far-left armed group November 17, had begun the hunger strike demanding to be transferred to a prison of his choice. In a statement released through his lawyer, Ioanna Kourtovik, Koufodinas thanked the "progressive people" who showed solidarity in a "fight against an inhumane power system." Several protest marches have taken place to support Koufodinas' demands and sympathisers have staged a series of arson and vandalism attacks in recent days.  "There are living social forces who resist arbitrariness, violence and authoritarianism. This gives (us) hope," Koufodinas said. Koufodinas also attacked the "governing family that has shown how ruthless it is in debasing the laws and the Constitution." That is a referenc

London police under pressure over clashes at women's protest.

Image
London's Metropolitan Police was under heavy pressure Sunday to explain its actions during a vigil for a woman whom one of the force's own officers is accused of murdering. Hundreds defied coronavirus restrictions to gather and protest violence against women, but the event ended with clashes between police and those attending. Home Secretary Priti Patel said scenes from Saturday's vigil in south London were "upsetting" and she is seeking a full report on what happened from the Metropolitan Police. The capital's mayor, Sadiq Khan, said the police response was "at times neither appropriate nor proportionate." Police were seen scuffling with some women at the event, and one woman was seen pinned to the ground by two officers. Several women were led away in handcuffs as other attendees chanted "Shame on you" at police. The force later said four people were arrested for violating public order and coronavirus regulations.    However, Patil – wh

Attacks on Chinese-run factories in Myanmar vex Beijing

Image
Attacks on Chinese-run factories in Myanmar's biggest city drew demands Monday from Beijing for protection for their property and employees, while many in Myanmar expressed outrage over China's apparent lack of concern for those killed in protests against last month's military coup. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the Chinese Embassy had contacted authorities in Myanmar and urged that police be deployed to protect the Chinese companies and personnel. Police and firefighters were sent to protect the factories, which are scattered across several industrial zones in Yangon, spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters in Beijing. He said China was closely watching and ``is very concerned about the impact on the safety of Chinese institutions and personnel.`` A statement posted by the Chinese Embassy to Myanmar on Facebook about the efforts to protect Chinese businesses triggered an outpouring of fury in more than 52,000 comments. ``Does it hurt? How about people dyin
